Bad times; the economy blues....

It's a terrible thing out there right now with people losing jobs and homes. I got laid-off myself and am looking for work--the first time in my long life that I can't find a job--it really sucks! I'm a plumber 20 years now and there is no work to be had, no one is building and there are too many plumbers to keep all of us going. I moved to Cape Cod from New York to help out my Dad so he wouldn't lose his house, he's on a budget and it's hard for him to make ends meet but I couldn't find work so I moved to Connecticut to try and find something--nothing! I left Cape Cod in March of '08 and had to move back to New York in October because I ran out of unemployment and couldn't afford to stay in Connecticut, I soon lost my apartment in New York and was now homeless and penniless. It's been hard for me the past 15 months, no work, little money and I now live in a homeless shelter, I get $22.50 twice a month to live on and there is no end in sight as I watch the possibilities for work shrink right before my eyes.

The situation is that there are big losses with lenders, and that makes it harder to get credit which in turn slows down the economy, and then the situation spirals to even greater losses and even fewer loans, and in the end it adds up to a loss of jobs and decreased spending further worsening the economic picture. To further add to the dreadful situation, home prices are falling all over the US at once, something that has never happened in all of our country's history and something the Feds' thought was literally impossible. Home sales and housing prices have fallen to 7.9%, the worst since 1979, and the situation is compounded by the fact that homes are worth 30% to 40% less then they were two years ago and that has led, in part to household wealth declining by $1 trillion in the first quarter of 2008. The fact is, houses are under water, meaning that they are worth much less now then homeowners owe on their mortgages and the long term situation does not look very promising--it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

What can we do as a people? Well, we can try to keep spending, even a little bit will help, and we can try to hire people, even for the littlest jobs--just so they can put food on the table and maybe keep up with the mounting bills. I know I wish I could get at least one day's pay. I'm not in as terrible debt as some of you out there are, but I could be, and it doesn't change anything. We, as a people, need to join together and help in anyway we can.

My farther remembers the "Great Depression" of the 1930's and how all the people stuck together, making sure that no one did without. He remembers people planting fruits and vegetables in the early spring wherever there was a place to plant, and canning was big back then--keep as much as you could to keep going through the year. But even though they did all that they could, things were still very bad and my uncle Mario got sick because of the situation and it crippled him for the rest of his life. In the end my family did survive and it was because, they, as a people, did what they could to help each other. The situation is no where as near as bad as it was way back then, but for some it is very close, and to lose all that you've worked so hard for in this short life is very profound and crippling, and rebounding is very nearly impossible in times like these. And for me, one who is used to getting up on his feet and in no time at all!--I'm not used to having nothing, and nothing, even though it has only been a short while, is way too long! So please, do what little you can, or the most! But do it!

Sincerely, Scotty
