Nobel Peace Prize Winner Al Gore, (former Vice President, US) forms a truthful, far reaching perspective on what will happen to the earth if nothing is done to stop the pollution that is causing global warming.
Gore, writer of the 1992 book, Earth in the Balance (New York Times Best Seller) took an interest in collage under the lead of Roger Revelle, a professor at Harvard who was one of the first to measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Entering congress, Gore lead the way to the first hearing on the subject. But, unfortunately, it took off very slowly.
In his vice presidency, he pushed for a carbon tax hoping that would be an incentive to use less fuel, making it last longer, and there by reducing emissions. It was partly implemented in 1993.
He also helped broker an international treaty called the Kyoto Protocol intended to lower green house gas emissions, but the US Senate voted 95 to 0 against on the premises that India and China would be exempt to a certain extent and they feared further trade imbalances and other issues with those countries.
Mr. Gore's support of environmental issues is far reaching and he has played a wonderful role in the education, financing, lobbying and further study of the effects we as a people of the Earth have on it's natural balance.
Needless to say, An Inconvenient Truth has had it's share of controversy. Some UK schools who had initially approved the screening of the film were challenged in the High Court of Justice based on the fact that it was political in nature. The court ruled in the end that Mr. Gore's presentation of cause and effect were for the most part "broadly accurate", and were allowed with certain restrictions.
In the US, 50,000 copies of An Inconvenient Truth were offered to the National Science Teachers Association but were rejected based on the fact that it would bring "unnecessary risk upon the [NSTA] capital campaign, especially certain targeted supporters." and that they saw "little, if any, benefit to the NSTA or it's members."
The NSTA also argued that distributing the film would have been contrary to a long-standing policy against distributing unsolicited materials to its members. RealClimate said the NSTA's actions were "bizarre" and "unconvincing", and wondered if their actions were influenced by the fact that the NSTA are funded by EXXON Corp. In the end, RealClimate stated that the NSTA should improve the "paltry" supply of material on global warming.
Also, The Great Global Warming Swindle a documentary film based on opinions of scientists who think global warming is not caused by pollutants, but say that they are in fact a product of natural events. In any case there is just to much evidence to the contrary, and I think that the mounting evidence that the Earth is at high risk due to green house emissions is overwhelming.
This is our planet, it is the only one around here, it's OK to kill it--we won't be around to see it (you hope!) but at the rate we're going our children might see it....
And in the end, it is my opinion that if unchecked, the way we treat the Earth, ourselves, each other, is going to lead to a terrible end, and not even Sauron of Tolkien's Middle Earth could do more harm then we.
